Halloween, inspiration, October, October a threshold month, personal, the natual and supernatural, the number 18, the process of shedding, This Sea Within, vast emptiness vastly full, When Things Go Missing, writing as soul-work

I’ll be stepping away for a while to give full attention to writing the second book in my Sea Within Trilogy. I think of this as soul-work, especially after having spent so much time lately on “promotion and sales.”
Writing is where I feel most at home, most myself, a deeper, more intuitive, more receptive self, where I’m at one with what the mind unfolds.
And October, this liminal month, is the perfect time to do so.
I’ve always loved the O in October.
It reminds me of the full moon, how it illuminates the darkness and casts moon-shadows across the landscape. How it manages to throw its face upon every pool and puddle, every watery surface that will receive it.
The O in October also symbolizes emptiness and fullness of all things.
The O a cypher signifying zero, nothing, as well as depicting an enclosed circle, whole and complete. Altogether it reminds me of the “Vast Emptiness, Vastly Full” that I have written about so often.
I love my birthdate as well: 18.
The number one (or perhaps an I?) is paired with the sign for infinity. Altogether, the never-ending I, or One, perhaps? There is a part of me, the deepest part, that has always believed in the eternal nature of things.
October is also a threshold month.
One season melts into other other. It’s the time of shedding, of falling leaves, exposing trees long, elegant limbs, bare and naked, for all to see, spare and lovely against a waning sky. I wonder now if that poem I wrote (“I am spare, I am clean, uncluttered space“) reflects the spirit of October, the baring of ourselves, shedding all that would conceal our inner essence?
Is that what Franny was doing in When Things Go Missing, shedding all that had been hiding who she truly was or was meant to be? In the novel I have her leaving in September. I should have made it October.
October is the month when that curtain between the natural and supernatural world parts.
In that gap we glimpse the awful face of things that have haunted humanity through the ages. Ghostly things that seem so real but have no explanation.
So while I’ll be away writing my novel, I’ll share on these pages a series of stories I wrote long ago about growing up in a haunted house and feeling its tremors years afterwards.
For October too is the month of Halloween, the dark eve before the coming of all that’s holy.
It’s also a good month for reading as well as writing!
