John Singer Sargent
Leaf shadows thrown by the morning sun against a creamy wall.
Soft, sensuous folds of a warm blanket tossed across my knees.
My grandmother’s hands wrapped around a mug as I sip sweet coffee.
So much I fail to see in the time of corona.
Or seeing, fail to note,
Or noting, fail to feel
What once I felt.
Poetry all around me.

This is beautiful, Deborah!
Thank you so much!
Welcome!
Beautiful poem, reminders, and painting Deborah. Thanks. I hope you’re taking care of yourself and family.
Thanks Brad. The painting has been a favorite for a long time. I love his work.
You seem to find/ follow a lot of good artists.
This line: “My grandmother’s hands wrapped around a mug as I sip sweet coffee.” caught me in the throat. Yes, my mother’s and my grandmother’s hands mold the coffee mug, too. Gorgeous images, Deborah.
Thanks Susanne. I still find it strange how I now own my grandmother’s hands.
This is lovely, Deborah, and so appropriate for this time. Love that painting too. A friend just sent me this sweet video by Tom Foolery telling a good night story to his children: “Tell me the story about the virus” https://youtu.be/bea4jCAkXsI.
Thank you for the link, Ken. I’ll check it out with my granddaughter.
Nicely done, Deborah.
You’re demonstrating what a
truly beautiful poetic
voice.
Thank you, Susan, that means a lot.
That was a lovely piece – thank you! And I like the artwork you chose as well 🙂
Thank you, when I was writing the poem, his painting came to mind.
Sometimes it’s easier to stay ‘closed’ to the “Poetry all around me.”
I get it…but then when we take a peek just to see what’s out there? A (he)art felt poem results…
Hugs
Thanks, Laura. You got it.
Beautiful writing. I deeply resonated with your words. I’m a new poetry blogger and would love to make some connections – you are more than welcome to check out my page 🙂
Thank you. And congrats on being a new blogger. I hope you’ll love it as much as I have, and make the same kinds of close connections with people you’ve never me but who you “resonate with” as you put it. I’ll be looking forward to checking out your blog.
Beautifully expressed, Deborah, I well know the feeling, though not as touchingly expressed here. It lends a soft poignancy to my own experience, but one of deep caring you bring across. Though – “Poetry all around me” – and your choice of one of Sargent’s quintessential dapple light passing across the walls of our lives, tells me your sense of life and beauty and human value are merely stunted, temporarily, understandably, by the overwhelming Earth wide nature of the virus. And the uneven responses around the world and within our countries on addressing this threat. Actually, I feel a great solace and comfort from your post, thank you, Deborah ❤️
Thank you Felipe. You seem to understand what I was feeling perfectly. That deep need to reawaken to the poetry, the spiritual essence of things around me, even while seemingly trapped within a precarious and fearful pandemic. We need that light especially in these dark times. I’m so grateful if this poem has brought some comfort to others.
Rereading it, Deborah, I can say it’s enduringly comforting; liked it even better the 2nd time; and definitely feel you’ve lost no touch with that beauty you see and feel simultaneously! ❤️
Lovely!!! Just all. Lovely!!!! So serene! x
Fantastic writing! I love lines five and six. Great work!
Thank you!

This is truly an amazing piece of poetry ma’am.
I too have tried writing a poem similar to yours. I would really feel happy if you take a look at it.

You poured out the words so well. Majority of people like me can relate to it.
Thank you!
A poetic compliment to the John Singer Sargent watercolor…it’s lovely.
Thank you. I love his watercolors, this one especially.
Corona has taken so much from us…
Wonderful poem 💖
So true. And thank you!
