. . . have you read anything hot lately?
Perhaps it was the convergence of Valentine’s Day and the release of Fifty Shades of Gray (the movie), but I’ve been on the look-out for a really hot romance. Something literary. Not the so-called mommy-porn “Gray” aspires to. Nor the BDSM that seems so popular these days. But a straight, steamy love story that has depth and substance. I have yet to find what I’m seeking.
It hasn’t been from lack of trying though. I read “Gray” back when it first came out just to see what the hoopla was all about. But I couldn’t get past the first three chapters–the writing was so silly, the characters so unbelievable, and even the sexual tension between the two seemed tepid at best. Nothing to keep me turning pages.
Since then I’ve revisited some “steamy” romances I read in my youth, only to find them sadly lacking. I’ve surfed through pages of reviews of erotic romance and downloaded a few e-books onto my Kindle (thank God for Kindle—this is what it was created for!). While some were fun reads, and others hot enough to steam up my reading glasses, all left me feeling vaguely dissatisfied.
I am seeking something that stimulates and satisfies in a deeper way than what I’ve found so far. A story that explores, perhaps, at least to some degree, both the sensual and spiritual nature of desire, arousal, and consummation. After all, sexual and spiritual pleasure, power and transformation are parallel journeys on the road to fulfillment. Both are precipitated by strong human desires for union with the Other. Both, arguably, are what shape us as human beings.
Each journey involves deep longing for something beyond the individual self. Each requires trust and receptivity, surrender and self-sacrifice, tenderness and devotion. Each gives way to passion and delight, awe and wonder, ecstasy and bliss, love and transcendence.
Each seeks the Beloved.
I can’t help thinking that the first journey, that’s seeded in sexual desire for oneness, is what prepares us for the second, to step outside ourselves into something that subsumes us. And I can’t help believing that the two journeys can overlap or coincide. That the parallels between them have deep significance.
Maybe this kind of recognition is too much to ask for in an erotic romance. But I’m still looking.

I read Lolita long ago. Beautiful writing and an intense story of one man’s forbidden lust for a young girl. The Lover by Margarite Duras was another beautifully written story of forbidden love between an older man and young teenager. But what I’m looking for would be between two consenting adults. Lady Chatterley’s Lover comes closer to what I have in mind, although I read it so long ago I’m not sure if it would still suit me. I’ll have to give it another look.

‘Lady Chatterley’s Lover’ defined D.H. Lawrence but ‘Women in Love’ or ‘The Rainbow’, are far better novels.

Hiraeth sounds interesting. I should mention that I was a beta reader for an urban fantasy novel called Trinity Stones by L.G. O’Connor that is full of lust and longing and has some super steamy pages toward the end between a mortal and hot angel. It was a fast, fun read and is now available for sale http://www.lgoconnor.com/site/.
The Clan of the Cave Bear series had some pretty hot scenes too, I remember, that explored the sexual/spiritual connection.

I find that sex is so in your face these days that all eroticism has has been deleted from that mystical mystery. The excitement factor so overused it’s like smoking pot four times a day. . .
Romance for me these days is sitting down with a pretty lady and actually listening to each other. . . .

Your concept of bringing forth the true mystical spirituality that brings two people together would make for a satisfying read. I too enjoyed “Lady Chatterley’s Lover,” way back when. Walt Whitman’s early work “I Sing the Body Electric” poem. This could be some of your resource material but I agree with the other comments, you have this particular book, which is so specific, inside of you. Can’t wait Deborah!

Have you ever read”A Knight in Shining Armor” by Jude Deveraux? It’s an oldie but a goodie time travel romance with the spiritual connection of soul mates you’re looking for.

Madame Bovary – a classic, but about a frustrated woman and her sexual desires.
The Museum of Innocence by Orhan Pamuk (Nobel Prize winner) – very hot! A male writer though, what about a female literary writer? Perhaps, there is a niche for you!

Interestingly, I just found out there’s a new erotic re-telling of Wuthering Heights out called Wuthering Nights. Unfortunately, according to the reviews on Amazon, it resorts to the BDSM sort of erotica, which isn’t what I’m looking for. Might be worth a peek, though, just to see how this author tackled the re-telling. I loved Angela Carter’s dark, steamy re-telling of some classic fairy tales in her book The Bloody Chamber.

I like a love story that teaches me something about the depth and range and nature of the love experience but I also want to “feel” the bond between the characters. Stories that deal with loss often reach me (I am a sucker for “Love Story” by Erich Segal).
While this book does not qualify as “steamy,” you might really like “Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe” by the poet Benjamin Alire Saenz. It’s about two teenage boys in El Paso in the mid-late 1980s who discover love with one another. It is a beautiful book.
