Last summer brought an abundance of roses, so many I did not have enough vases to hold them all. And I only picked those hidden from view!
This year the roses are few and those poorly formed, although our watering and fertilizing and spraying have all been the same. But the baby quail, and deer, and turkey! We’ve never seen so many baby critters trailing through all our yards, hunkering under the bushes, and flying up into the treetops!
This week a heatwave has been forecast, with temperature over 100 for ten days straight and up to 112 degrees. Clear skies, zero precipitation.
But twice this week, instead of heat, we got warm rain. One time lasting all day, and today our house shook with thunder. The rain fell so hard and thick it looked like hail. And they say it never rains in California in the summertime!
A sign of the times, this unexpected mixture of drought and abundance. And not limited to nature. So much seems surreal.
Mailboxes ripped up and sorting machines thrown into dumpsters right before an election!
Walls of moms, and dads with leaf blowers, being tear-gassed by storm troopers!
The first Black woman chosen as VP on a major political ticket!
A diplomatic treaty signed between the UAE and Israel!
Open warfare between teachers and governors over whether to open schools or resort to distant learning again!
Hoards of unmasked worshipers swamping the beaches in Orange County, despite a pandemic that is killing hundreds of thousands of Americans!
What does it all mean? How will it all end?
We are lost within the grey fog of war.
Clearly we live in interesting times. A curse? Possibly. A cleansing? Hopefully.
No wonder we feel as if the rug has been pulled out from under our feet. And we haven’t quite landed yet.

It is so strange, isn’t? These changes in nature. Now California is getting fire tornados! Something unheard of a few years ago. Scary!

Great summation of today’s unusual and sometimes bizarre happenings. Yes, Deborah, our country and the world we’re living in today feels surreal to me. Kind of feels like we’ve entered “the twilight zone.” Can’t say I like it. Not one bit. Wish I could hit the stop button on the remote and make it all go away or switch channels to a more peaceful theatre. Everybody has to work together to make things right again. “Let there be peace on earth and let it begin with me.”

I write this from my front porch in CT where I’m enjoying the first rainy day – like real rainy day falling all day — all summer. It’s refreshing! And the rest — yes, weird and troubling times!

Yup. Still falling. Though strangely, for us here in the midwest, we’ve had rather delightful weather for the most part…..quite certain the other meteorological shoe will drop at any moment….probably have tornadoes for Christmas….

I’m glad to hear it’s been quiet in the Midwest so far. I hope it continues. That thunderstorm I wrote about brought lots of lightening and now our state is ablaze. I wish that rain would fall again in spades.

I can understand your despair. You must be taking in a lot of drive-by media hype. The pandemic is real, the disease new, but the death rate in the U.S. is less than a half of one percent. Note: you don’t hear that in the news, and only see it if you research the statistics. Mail boxes removed? The media won’t tell you it’s because they were damaged by riots, but the post master will; again, one has to go looking. As for the sorting machines? Well, they’ll be replaced, if one asks the post masters, and with newer technology, but the President isn’t helping the cause any… no surprise there. I remember studying in school about something called ‘the Jingo/Yellow Press. It’s hype was all about STARTING a war in Cuba in the 1890’s. Our press seems to want civil unrest. Too bad they can’t do journalism instead of sensationalism. Hope this helps a bit.

Thank you for attempting to cheer me up. But I don’t think I’ve been taken in by hype. Unfortunately this is all too real. Whatever the percentage in death rate, over 170,000 people have died from covid, many of which wouldn’t have if we’d had a leader who responsibly addressed this crisis from the beginning. Mailboxes removed because damaged by riots in places there were none? Even Lovejoy says he will not replace them or the sorting machines. Yes, there is a lot of yellow press on Fox and Breibart, etc. They are the only ones attempting social unrest. But responsible media outlets backed by facts and science are sounding a legitimate alarm. We all need to wake up and remove this dangerous conman and narcissist from office.

I’m curious at this point…. what media outlets do you find credible? I ask because I’m not finding any. I’m raised in the era of Cronkite and Bernard Shaw (CNN). Most seem bent on discrediting the President. Followed NPR since 1988, up ’til they fired Juan Williams. A few (Fox/TheBlaze) are so bent towards supporting him they don’t even report news any longer, just political hype. Who do you trust and why?
