I haven’t been painting this year as much as last. But I wanted to share a few that will probably find a place on my wall. All of them are a mix of watercolor and oil pastel, which I’ve been playing with a lot lately.
I’ve included two paintings in this post, both proof of my love affair with trees. The one above, Roots and Rocks, is from a nearby creek bed. I love the way the roots of the old oak hug the rocks around it. The reference photo is below.

Paintings always look better when matted.

The second painting, Tangled Limbs, and its reference photo are below.

This is one of the rare paintings which I think looks better the closer you get to it, where you can see the texture and marks better.

You can’t see it in the reference photo, but the light streaming through those limbs was dazzling. I tried to capture a bit of that by dripping on yellow paint from the top.
I’ll have a couple more paintings to share soon.

Deborah, I love the luminosity in the colours of your trees….they are alive. Xx

Love tree roots. 🌳

Yes, me too. There’s something about roots, twisting down through the earth, holding us up, nurturing, all that mostly hidden. To see it exposed is rather beautiful and inspiring.

Deborah, this is a beautiful reminder of the roots that hold us fast, the eager stretching of our limbs to embrace light and love and the colours that dance across our days, begging us to notice… and maybe paint.. 🙂

They’re beautiful Deborah. What is the medium? And I agree matting makes artwork pop!

Thank you! I used oil pastel and watercolor on cold pressed Arches paper for these.

Thank you! When I first started painting it was with soft pastels, but I was just learning and only a few came out the way I wanted. I liked water color much better when I turned to that, and lately mixing oil pastel with watercolor is a favorite technique. Someday I would like to go back and try the soft pastels again. See that works for me now. What is your medium?

I flip flop between watercolor and oil. Once in a blue moon I will pull out the acrylic. BUT – I have not used mediums together – like oil pastel and watercolor. This gets me thinking. I like it! Thanks.
