Did you watch the Grammys this year? Any favorites among the winners and nominees?
Here are some Grammy winners and nominees that didn’t get a lot of press, but well worth your attention if you enjoy classical music.
Best Classical Instrumental Solo
Winner – Transcendental” — Daniil Trifonov
Nominee – “Levina: The Piano Concertos” — Maria Lettberg (Ariane Matiakh, conductor, Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin)
Here Lettberg is playing Etude Op. 8 No. 12 by Scriabin (alternate version)
Nominee – ”Haydn: Cello Concertos” — Steven Isserlis {Florian Donderer, conductor, The Deutsch Kammerphilharmonie Bremen)
Here Isserlis is playing with the Norwegian Chamber Orchestra.

Thank you for this, Deborah – never heard of Grammy’s for classical music performance…
The Liszt was no doubt chosen as winner in part for the incredible challenging score but the execution of it by Danill is captivating even for me a non-pianist.
The Scriabin nominee made sense of the genre via her phrasing, intuitive and clean playing…brava!
And Isserlis is a cellists cellist! How can anyone not like him or the Haydn?

It’s great to get a musician’s take on this. Laura. Thank you. I only caught the beginning of the Grammys this year and later looked online to see who won what. I too was surprised and pleased that they give Grammys for classical music, as well as other genres I hadn’t realized, like New Age, world music, and the spoken word (audio books!) Did you watch the Grammys? Any favorites?
