After these past two tumultuous weeks launching my new novel, I felt a sudden need to space out for a while. To empty the mind and allow soothing sounds and images to fill it. So I’m turning to old favorites.
Bill Evans’s “Peace Piece” is hailed as one of the most beautiful and evocative solo piano improvisations ever recorded. Miles Davis said: Bill had this quiet fire that I loved on piano. The way he approached it, the sound he got was like crystal notes or sparkling water cascading down from some clear waterfall.
Maurice Sapiro’s tonal painting “Mist,” featured above, so beautifully complements the tranquil radiance found in Peace Piece.
Evans is one of the greatest jazz pianist/composers ever. He greatly influenced the work of many jazz musicians who came after him, including Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays who paid tribute to Evans, who died 45 years ago this month, with another favorite of mine, September 15th.
This unspeakably beautiful song, played with such tenderness and longing, is paired with Sapiro’s haunting paintings below.

I hope you enjoyed mellowing out with me today. Peace and love to you all.
Art and music played huge roles in creating my debut novel When Things Go Missing. It is now available at Amazon, Bookshop, Barnes & Noble and other major retailers.

Well deserved space out time, Deborah. ❤️
Thank you for sharing your mellow space here – the Bill Evans selection especially hit home. The essence, the reminder of quality music that touches, moves and expresses that which is often quietly inarticulate. Cohesive sound without a click-track grating in the ear of the performer during recording…human heartbeats, not AI techno directed performance.

You write about music so beautifully and knowingly, Laura. Easy to tell you are an accomplished musician. I’m so glad you liked Peace Piece. Another blogger introduced me to it, and it’s been a favorite ever since. It truly slows the mind because it starts so slow and each note moving forward and then that cascade of notes toward the end—ecstasy.

We can never get enough of a good thing, Deborah, especially when it’s this sublime. I see you keep coming back to these beautiful pieces of music complemented by the special artwork of Sapiro. I turned you onto this Peace Piece by Bill Evans, and you introduced me to this lovely Evans tribute piece by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays, and the sublime art of Sapiro.
I received your email the day this was posted on September 30. It was a nice surprise, and it reminded me of that same date in 1967, 58 years ago in Montreal, when I had learned to meditate with TM.
I received a copy of your book over the weekend and am looking forward to getting into it. Don’t know how long it will take me to finish it, but when I do I will post a review on Amazon.
Enjoy more well-earned relaxation!

ps-my review still is in Amazon limbo & unlisted (says it’s submitted & listed) even though I’m a verified buyer and have the requisite $50 minimum year purchases on record. I’m posting here to alert others to this possibility. 😦

Thanks, Laura. Yes, they seem to be very slow “approving” reviews. They say it can take up to three days. But others have said sometimes they take much longer. Several others who said they posted reviews are waiting too.
