I came across these two quotes recently and had to share them with you. Each from very different authors, but expressing so eloquently what I firmly believe.
From The Painted Drum by Louise Erdrich
Life will break you. Nobody can protect you from that, and living alone won’t either, for solitude will also break you with its yearning. You have to love. You have to feel. It is the reason you are here on earth. You are here to risk your heart. You are here to be swallowed up. And when it happens that you are broken, or betrayed, or left, or hurt, or death brushes near, let yourself sit by an apple tree and listen to the apples falling all around you in heaps, wasting their sweetness. Tell yourself that you tasted as many as you could.
Let your heart be broken. Allow, expect, look forward to. The life that you have so carefully protected and cared for. Broken, cracked, rent in two. Heartbreakingly, your heart breaks, and in the two halves, rocking on the table, is revealed rich earth. Moist, dark soil, ready for new life to begin.
From The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran
Think not you can direct the course of love, for love, if it finds you worthy, directs your course.
Love has no other desire but to fulfill itself.
But if you love and must needs have desires, let these be your desires:
To melt and be like a running brook that sings its melody to the night.
To know the pain of too much tenderness.
To be wounded by your own understanding of love;
And to bleed willingly and joyfully.
To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving;
To rest at the noon hour and meditate love’s ecstasy;
To return home at eventide with gratitude;
And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart and a song of praise upon your lips.

Thanks for posting these, Deborah. My father always kept The Prophet at his bedside. I tried to read it when I was younger, but couldn’t grasp the meaning.

You are welcome, VJ. The Prophet was a favorite of mine as a young adult. I really liked the sections on marriage and also children.

You pulled my very favorite quote from “The Painted Drum” – I have it handwritten in my book of quotes from this year as that is when I first read the book! I have even begun speaking it outloud for a possible ‘poetry’ open mic – I think it performs well, don’t you? I’m not at all surprised that you gravitated to those words, too, flower sister!
Thanks for the reminder of our purpose in life: in the midst of it all, I sometimes forget that love really is everything.
And of course, “the Prophet” – a book discovered in my teens (you, too, do doubt) holds reminders still.

That’s so cool, Laura! What a great quote to do on open mic. We do seem to have so much in common, Flower Sister! The birthday we share is coming soon. I hope yours is wonderful!

The sculpture reminds me of some by Charles Umlauf, who lived the second half of his life in Austin.

Getting knocked down allows one to take a good look at everything. You wind up missing a lot of detail during those smooth times. The rocky parts of the road will reward you in the long run.

Yes, I agree. The rough patches will strengthen you. They are part of the whole journey. Thanks for coming here and reading and responding, Christopher. I really appreciate that.
