Vincent Van Gogh
I know I’ve written about this before, my love affair with the colors blue and gold, how they play so poignantly against each other. I was reminded of this by a quote found on one of my favorite abstract artist’s website, MyMonkey Mind
There is no blue without yellow and without orange.
Vincent Van Gogh
I’m not sure what Van Gogh meant by this, but it struck a chord with me, and I wonder if that is why I love these two colors in combination so much, opposites that cannot be parted, that sing to each other, that create a deep and wide, high and low, dazzling and dark space that fills every corner of my mind.
Blue and Gold was one of the first Pinterest pages I created, just so I could go there and get my fill of that rapture.
Here are a few of my favorites. Tell me, how do they make you feel?

Willem de Kooning

Odilon Redon

Gustav Klimt

Henri Matisse

Emil Nolde

Andre Derrain

Claude Monet

Paul Klee

Blue and gold do play off each other nicely. My favorite image was the one by Gustav Klimt. Currently, greens, golds, and orange are my favorite colors. They both soothe and ignite me.

Yes, I love greens and golds too, and also greens with blue.

Yes, beautiful, and I am sure you do know what he meant! However, these are not my colors (although I am working on a blog post for tomorrow where I do realize that my favorite outfits have usually had blue in them haha). I love fresh lipstick red with wicker color. Black and ivory. And, of course, coral with everything.

Lipstick red, that does sound bright and bold. But what color is wicker? I do love coral, and teal too.

Coral always makes me smile. Teal used to be one I loved when I was young and then my daughter did the same thing. Now we both still like teal but are not as in love with it as we were. Wicker is that natural wicker color, similar to ivory and cream but with a little wink to it.

Ivory and cream, yes I tend toward them too. I have some lovely ivory and black jewelry I picked up on our travels that I’m partial to.

So striking, but not cheap-looking like black and white haha. Ebony and ivory.

I’m trying to unpack what Van Gogh meant by that quote. Maybe because blue is the opposite of orange (ie, you mix the other two primary colours, red and yellow to make orange) but really I can’t figure out any other explanation.

I don’t know of course, but I’m thinking now that gold and orange as blue’s complements are needed for us to truly see or appreciate the color blue. I think that’s part of what I love about the combination, the gold becomes so much more vivid and vibrant next to blue, and vice versa.

They are such happy colours, full of the radiance of sun, sky and sea. I smiled at each one! A lovely selection to lift the spirits. I think the deep cobalt and indigo blues are greatly enhanced by the warming yellow, orange and gold tones, and vise versa, of course. They bring out the true beauty in one another. Thank you, Deborah. xo 🙂
